Domenico Orlando


Solo Oboe with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Maestro Riccardo Chailly since 2009, Domenico Orlando started piano studies at the age of 6 and soon after discovered the oboe and his passion for music. At the age of 17 he earned a Diploma with honors at the Conservatory of Music in Salerno, in the oboe class of Maestro Alfonso Smaldone.


He continued his musical development in Rome with Luca Vignali and in Geneva with Maurice Bourgue, where he received the Diplome de Solist with honors in 2004. Even before graduation he was participating in national and international competitions, winning second prize (first was not assigned) at the Concorso Nazionale G. Tomassini di Petritoli in 1997, and third prize in the 7th Tokyo International Competition in 2003. At the age of 18 he played first oboe in the Santa Cecilia Youth Orchestra in Rome under Maestro Myung-Whun Chung. A few years later he was named principal oboe in the San Gallen Symphony Orchestra, Switzerland, while in January 2000 he was playing in the Bayerischerrundfunk orchestra under Maestro Lorin Maazel. In 2001 he won the principal oboe position at the Teatro Regio di Torino, where he remained until 2009. This is his second summer with AYO.
